Team’s former third baseman struggled in Boston.

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Pablo Sandoval plans to sign a minor league contract to return to the San Francisco Giants.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Thursday because the agreement had not been announced.

Sandoval technically will not be free to agree to a deal with a team until 1 p.m. Eastern today.

The Boston Red Sox released Sandoval on Wednesday when the third baseman didn’t report after being designated for assignment last week.

It officially ended the Boston tenure for the slugger, who never was healthy enough to live up to the expectations that came with the $95 million free-agent contract he signed in 2014.

With the Red Sox unable to find a team willing to take on part of his salary, the 2012 World Series MVP with the San Francisco Giants, moved on after a total of 161 games, 575 at-bats, 136 hits and 14 homers for Boston — but not a single one of them in the postseason.

Mariners: Seattle sent four prospects to the Marlins for right-handed reliever David Phelps (2-4, 3.45 ERA in 47 innings). In return, Miami gets highly regarded outfielder Brayan Hernandez and right-handed pitching prospects Pablo Lopez, Brandon Miller and Lukas Schiraldi.

Nationals: Washington had no update on a second MRI on the fractured right wrist of shortstop Trea Turner. He is rehabbing in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Angels: Los Angeles Placed outfielder Cameron Maybin on the DL with a medial collateral ligament sprain in his right knee. The Angels said he would be out 2-4 weeks.

Brewers: Outfielder Ryan Braun was held out of the lineup for a second consecutive day as the team tries to monitor his workload while he plays through a strained left calf that’s bothered him all season. Braun entered as a pinch hitter in the sixth and flew out with two on and two outs in the loss at Pittsburgh.

Mets: Asdrubal Cabrera, who began the season as New York’s shortstop but moved to second base about a month ago to fill in for the injured Neil Walker (partial tear of left hamstring), will begin taking grounders at third. Cabrera is expected to see action there when Walker returns, manager Terry Collins said.

Walker begins a rehab assignment today at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Twins: Former manager Tom Kelly will become the latest Minnesota legend to have his likeness on display at its’ ballpark.

The Twins will honor Kelly this afternoon with a pregame ceremony outside Target Field. His will be the eighth bronze statue to be installed, all built by local artist Bill Mack. The others are Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew, Kirby Puckett, Calvin Griffith, Carl and Eloise Pohlad, Tony Oliva and Kent Hrbek.

When Kelly retired in 2001, he was the longest tenured manager or coach in major pro sports. His number (10) was retired in 2012. Kelly spent 15 years as manager, winning the World Series in 1987 and 1991.
