Johnson says new AD Stansbury has ‘been nothing but supportive’
Whatever Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s problems are, his boss does not rate as one of them. Given the opportunity last week to evaluate the work of athletic director Todd Stansbury, Johnson gave him a thumbs up.
“I think he’s been nothing but supportive since he got here,” Johnson said at the ACC Kickoff. “I think he and I have a good relationship. And I know that he loves Georgia Tech and wants Georgia Tech to be successful. His vision, you would have to ask him, but I’ve seen nothing but him being supportive since he got here.”
With Johnson and the football program, that has meant Stansbury’s support of projects like a locker- room renovation and adding recruiting staff. Stansbury also led a successful modification to the ACC’s scheduling policy after Johnson complained about the frequency with which league opponents were playing the Jackets coming off a bye week.
Johnson has also appreciated Stansbury’s management style, which has been more personal than that of predecessor Mike Bobinski.
“I don’t want to trash the last administration because that doesn’t do anybody any good,” Johnson said. “Cer- tainly, I’m sure they wanted to win just like this guy. Just a different style. I think that I’m excited because I feel like that Todd and I have a relationship.
“I think that he’s probably been in my office more since he’s been here than the other guy total. Now, that doesn’t make it right or wrong, it’s just a different way of doing things.”
