Bengals suspend Jones for opener:

Extension keeps guard in Carolina through ’21 season.

-

Cincinnati cornerback Adam Jones will miss the regular-season opener against Baltimore after an altercation at a downtown hotel earlier this year. Jones, a graduate of Westlake High School, had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from the January incident. The NFL said Friday the suspension was for a violation of its personal conduct policy.

The Carolina Panthers signed two-time Pro Bowl guard Trai Turner to a fouryear contract extension Friday for a reported $45 million, keeping him with the team through the 2021 season.

Turner was a third-round pick in 2014 and has participated in the past two Pro Bowls.

Turner started all 16 games the past two seasons, including three at right tackle last year because of injuries to other players on the offensive line. He is the first player to receive a contract extension from new interim general manager Marty Hurney.

Linebacker Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen are also up for contract extensions.

■ Former Panthers offensive lineman Michael Oher, who faces misdemeanor charges of assaulting an Uber driver, was sued in connection with the incident. Girma Berkessa says in the complaint that an “extremely intoxicated” Oher pushed him to the ground, kicked him and called him slurs several times April 14.

A hearing on Oher’s misdemeanor assault case that had been scheduled for Friday was pushed back to Oct.

31. Oher, the subject of the movie “The Blind Side,” was released by the Panthers on Thursday after he failed a physical.

Bengals: Cornerback Adam Jones was suspended for the regular-season opener against Baltimore for his role in an altercation at a Cincinnati hotel in January. Jones had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from the incident, the latest in a history of offthe-field legal issues for the NFL veteran.

The NFL said the suspension was for a violation of its personal conduct policy. Jones can appeal the suspension within three days.

Otherwise, he will be eligible to return to the active roster Sept. 11 following the opener against the Ravens. Jones may participate in all preseason practices and games.

Chiefs: Quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed a fouryear rookie contract. Kansas City traded its first- and third-round picks this year and its first-round pick next year to the Bills to grab the Texas Tech quarterback with the 10th overall selection. It was the first time Kansas City had taken a quarterback in the first round since Todd Blackledge in 1983.

Jets: Safety Jamal Adams of LSU, the sixth overall pick in the draft, signed a fouryear deal worth about $22 million. Adams is expected to be a starter this season. All nine of the Jets’ selections in April’s draft have signed.

Packers: All-time leading receiver Donald Driver and cornerback Mark Lee will be inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame today at Lambeau Field.

Cardinals: Arizona reported to training camp Friday in Glendale, Ariz. The Cardinals are the first team to report, getting a head start because they play in the Hall of Fame game against Dallas on Aug. 3.

Giants: A week after Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said Dallas would win a second straight NFC East title, New York safety Landon Collins strongly disputed that prediction. “I highly doubt that,” he said Friday while hosting the Landon Collins Football ProCamp in Wayne, N.J. “They do not control the East. That’s over with. We’re going to make a run for it. They’re not going to win it, I can tell you that much. We definitely want to take over.” The Giants, who haven’t won a division title since 2011, open the season against the Cowboys in Dallas on Sept. 10. The Giants beat the Cowboys twice last season, even though Dallas won the division.
