Q: Who replaced Jeff Sessions in the U.S. Senate, and how was he replaced? Was it an appointment by the Alabama governor? —David Dickey, Dallas

A: When Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) was confirmed as U.S. Attorney General in February, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley appointed Luther Strange to replace him in the Senate until a special election could be held.

Strange, a Birmingham native, was serving as Alabama’s attorney general at the time of his appointment, but had already announced plans to run in the special election to fill Sessions’ vacant seat.

Strange currently serves on four Senate committees: Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Armed Services; Budget; and Energy and Natural Resources.

Special election primaries to fill Sessions’ seat will be held Aug. 15. Strange is among nine Republican candidates and seven Democrat candidates who are actively seeking their party’s nomination for the seat. A runoff, if necessary, is scheduled for Sept. 26, and the general election will be held Dec. 12.
