Positive reviews for Jeter as buyer

Yanks star praised at owners’ meetings with deal in works.

Derek Jeter won five World Series during a 20-year run with the Yankees. He piled up 3,465 hits and made the All-Star team 14 times.

Will that success continue in the front office of the Miami Marlins?

Jeter is a limited partner in an ownership group led by venture capitalist Bruce Sherman that has a $1.2 billion agreement in place to buy the Marlins from Jeffrey Loria. Sherman met with the MLB ownership committee at the owners’ meetings Wednesday in Chicago, and the deal could be completed by the end of the season.

It’s a long road to the finish, but the 43-year-old Jeter would take over Miami’s business and baseball operations if the transaction is approved. The Marlins have finished under .500 every year since 2010.

“I had him for 12 years and he’s smart,” former Yankees manager Joe Torre said. “He’s got a feel for things. … He never shirks responsibility.”

Torre was on the bench for four of Jeter’s five titles, including his World Series MVP performance in 2000. While the potential position with the Marlins is a new challenge, Torre thinks he has the skills to pull it off.

“He’s pretty well put together,” said Torre, now an MLB executive. “I don’t think he’s going into this thing blind.”

Asked why he thinks Jeter would be successful with the Marlins, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner responded: “Because that’s all he’s done in his career.”

“That organization has some challenges, but he’s been through a lot,” Steinbrenner said. “As far as baseball operations, I think he’ll get the job done.”

Padres: Right-hander Jered Weaver announced his retirement before Wednesday’s game. Weaver, a threetime All-Star, battled health issues since signing in the offseason. The 12-year veteran, who spent the bulk of his career with the Angels, was 150-98 with a 3.63 ERA. Weaver (0-5, 7.44) struggled in his last start May 19 against Arizona.

Angels: Left-hander Andrew Heaney (Tommy John surgery) will come off the DL and make his season debut Friday.

Nationals: Manager Dusty Baker said the team was evaluating right-hander Ryan Madson’s finger injury, while outfielder Jayson Werth (left foot contusion) will go to the team’s spring training facility and then perhaps on a rehabilitation assignment while Washington is on its seven-game trip.

Giants: Second baseman Joe Panik was placed on the seven-day concussion DL retroactive to Monday after he was hit in the head during a home-plate collision Sunday against Washington, while infielder Miguel Gomez (right knee) will go on a rehab assignment in Single-A before being activated Saturday.

Marlins: Giancarlo Stanton’s homer streak ended at a club-record six consecutive games, but he singled, stole a base and scored in a fourrun first inning to help Miami beat San Francisco 8-1. The major league record for the longest home run streak is eight games.

Phillies: Outfielder Odubel Herrera (strained left hamstring) was out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game.
