Mets slugger out for season?

Cespedes to have examination on right hamstring.

-

Oft-injured New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes could be done for the year after straining his right hamstring while running the bases Friday night.

“I’d say (his) season is in jeopardy,” general manager Sandy Alderson said after the Mets beat Washington 4-2.

Alderson said the injury is “similar in location and severity to the one on the left side” Cespedes suffered in April. That setback put Cespedes on the disabled list April 29 and the slugger didn’t return until June 10.

Cespedes will be put on the DL and examined Monday in New York.

“I wouldn’t necessarily expect it be as long, but we don’t have that much time left in the season,” Alderson said. “Very disappointing.”

Cespedes has played in only 81 games this season due to various injuries. He is hitting .292 with 17 home runs and 42 RBIs for a team that’s fallen out of playoff contention.

Nationals: Bryce Harper is on the disabled list, but many of his teammates are getting close to being healthy again. Stephen Strasburg is back on the mound, ace Max Scherzer is expected to return Monday and shortstop Trea Turner and outfielder Jayson Werth aren’t too far behind.

Scherzer threw a bullpen session Saturday and will get an extra day to prepare before he pitches against the Miami Marlins a day after Washington’s doubleheader with the New York Mets on Sunday. Scherzer last pitched Aug. 13.

Royals: Left-hander Danny Duffy will undergo an MRI after being placed on the disabled list with a sore elbow.

Red Sox: Second baseman Dustin Pedroia, on the 10-day disabled list with left knee inflammation, took grounders and hit during batting practice Saturday. Manager John Farrell said there won’t be a return date until he can fully run the bases.

Orioles: J.J. Hardy was scheduled to play another rehab game Saturday night for Triple-A Norfolk as he continues to work back from a broken right wrist.

Yankees: Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka makes his 100th career start in the majors today. He’s 48-26.

Athletics: Mark Canha made his seventh career start in center field Saturday, a necessity created when the A’s traded Rajai Davis.

Dodgers: Infielder Cody Bellinger (ankle) ran at 80 percent, hit and took batting practice Friday. He said he’s trying to get used to playing with tape on his ankle.
