Phillies rookie sets MLB record

Hoskins (64 at-bats) becomes fastest to 11 home runs.

Rookie Rhys Hoskins homered yet again — and he added a game-changing diving catch to his repertoire.

Hoskins homered for the fifth straight game, and his stellar grab in left field started a triple play in the fifth inning in Sunday’s win over the Cubs.

Hoskins led off the eighth with a homer to give him 11 home runs in his first 18 games over 64 at-bats, becoming the fastest in MLB history to reach 11 homers. Yankees Shane Spencer and Gary Sanchez, who previously shared the mark for fastest to 11 homers, needed 81 at-bats.

Hoskins, who has 24 RBIs, was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Aug. 10and went homer less until Aug. 14. He’s batting .297 and slugging .828, with 11 walks and 13 strikeouts.

Hoskins’ 11 homers in August are a club record for home runs in a month by a rookie. There are four more games this month for him to challenge the club’s record of 15 homers in a month, done by Jim Thome and Cy Williams.

Marlins: Giancarlo Stanton became the first NL player to reach 50 homers since Prince Fielder hit 50 for Milwaukee in 2007. Stanton’s 17th homer in August tied him for the second-most in MLB history in the month, behind Rudy York’s 18 in 1937.

Cardinals: Thirdbaseman Jedd Gyorko (right hamstring strain) was placed on the 10-day DL and could miss a few weeks. First baseman Luke Voit was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Cardinals GM Mike Girsch said infielder Matt Carpenter could see time at third with Gyorko out.

Tigers: Designated hitter Victor Martinez, 38, was placed on the 10-day DL with an irregular heartbeat, the second time he has landed on the DL this season with the condition.

Reds: First baseman Joey Votto had reached base in a season-high 29 consecutive games before going 0 for 4 on Saturday. He bounced back to walk five times on Sunday for the second time in his career, tying a franchise record.

Twins: Byron Buxton had the eighth three-homer-game in Twins history on Sunday. It was the second for the team this season as Eddie Rosario hit three homers in a 20-7 win over Seattle on June 13.

Indians: Cleveland dominated the visiting Royals over three games, outscoring them 20-0while posting three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1956.

Mariners: Seattle’s five errors in the first inning Sunday at Yankee Stadium were themost in an inning in club history. The previous major league team to make five errors in one inning was the 1977 Cubs. Mariners shortstop Jean Segura committed three early errors — two on one play. Third baseman Kyle Seager and left fielder Ben Gamel also had errors in the inning as the Yankees scored six runs (one earned) in the first. “It was obviously the worst inning we’ve had all year,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said.

Rangers: Texas is scheduled to begin a three-game series in Houston on Tuesday, but those plans were on hold because of flooding from Hurricane Harvey. The Rangers flew from California to Dallas — as did the Astros — until MLB figures out what to do.
