Clements gets 1st career win in Xfinity

Newgarden drives to IndyCar victory Saturday in Illinois.

Jeremy Clements battled Matt Tifft down the stretch at Road America before pulling away to the finish line after the two leaders spun out near the end of the second-to-last lap Sunday for his first career Xfinity Series victory.

Working with fresh tires down the stretch of the Elkhart Lake, Wis., track, Clements chased down Tifft after pitting with nine laps left to surrender the lead. Clements finally caught up with Tifft on the 44th lap, with their cars spinning into the dirt on last turn of the 14-turn road course.

The 32 year-old Clements recovered first and sped away on the last lap to capture the checkered flag for the first time in 256 Xfinity series races. Michael Annett passed Tifft to take second, 5.8 seconds behind Clements. Tifft settled for third.

Series leader Elliott Sadler finished 14th.

IndyCar: Josef New garden bumped past Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud and drove away to his fourth IndyCar series victory of the season late Saturday at Gateway Motorsport­s Park in Madison, Ill.

Newgarden led 170 of the 248 laps on the 1.25-mile oval en route to his seventh career victory and Penske’s fourth at Gateway and 196th overall.

Pa gen au de nd ed up finishing third behind Chip Gan as si driver Scott Dixon.

Newgarden increased his series points lead over Dixon to 31 with two races remaining in the 17-race schedule. Dixon finished 0.6850 of a second back.

Pagenaud was followed by Penske’s Helio Castroneve­s and AJ Foyt Racing’s Conor Daly.

Formula One: Lewis Hamilton celebrated his record-equaling 68th pole position with a victory at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorcha­mps Sunday, trimming championsh­ip leader Sebastian Vettel’s lead to seven points (220-213).

In his Mercedes, Hamilton clinched his fifth win of the season and 58th overall, having equaled Michael Schumacher’s pole record.

Vettel finished second in his Ferrari, about 2 seconds behind Hamilton.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was third ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, with Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas fifth.
