Hurdle agrees to new deal

Report: Extension will keep him with Pirates through ’21.

-

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle reportedly agreed to a four-year contract extension Monday.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the extension will keep Hurdle, 60, in Pittsburgh through the 2021 season and replaces the club option for 2018.

Since taking over the team in 2011, Hurdle has led the Pirates to three playoff appearances, but none since 2015. The team was eight games back in the chase for the NL’s second wild card on Monday.

Hurdle is 574-534 in seven seasons in Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks: First baseman Paul Goldschmidt will have an MRI on his right elbow.

Manager Torey Lovullo said the All-Star has been dealing with lingering right elbow issues. Lovullo said Goldschmidt wanted to play Monday night against the Dodgers, but the team decided to be cautious and have him checked out. Goldschmidt is batting .314 with 34 home runs and 109 RBIs.

Pirates: Josh Bell broke the NL record for most home runs by a rookie switch hitter with his 24th of the season Monday. His two-run homer in the first inning moved Bell ahead of former Braves star Chipper Jones, who hit 23 in 1995.

Cubs: Right-hander Jake Arrieta was removed in the third inning Monday with an apparent leg injury. The 2015 Cy Young Award winner clutched his right leg several times following a pitch. Arrieta attempted to throw a practice pitch after being visited by trainers but failed to release the ball while in obvious pain.

Mets: Team captain David Wright, 34, will have surgery on his right rotator cuff today, ending any hope of the star third baseman playing this season. Wright last played in the majors in May 2016. He had surgery the following month for a herniated disk in his neck. Wright has three years and $47 million remaining on an eight-year, $138 million deal he signed in 2012.

Yankees: With center fielder Aaron Hicks (left oblique strain) sent to the 10-day disabled list, manager Joe Girardi said either Tyler Wade (who was recalled Monday) or Ronald Torreyes could serve as the fourth outfielder.

Phillies: Center fielder Odubel Herrera (strained left hamstring) was activated from the 10-day DL and had a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games, the longest by a Phillie since Raul Ibanez’s 18 straight from July 22-Aug. 11, 2010.

Tigers: Since 1913, only one Tigers starting pitcher has allowed more hits in his MLB debut than Artie Lewicki’s 11 in five innings Monday. On April 19, 1921, Carl Holling gave up 13 hits (and 12 runs) in his debut against the Indians. Holling’s career ended the next year after 40 games, including 12 starts.

Giants: Manager Bruce Bochy said right-hander Matt Cain is away from the team for personal reasons. He’s expected to rejoin the team in Chicago against the White Sox this weekend.

Astros: Right-hander Lance McCullers (back) will come off the DL to make his first start since July 30 on Wednesday at Seattle.
