Colts GM: Luck out for opener vs. Rams

-

Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard confirmed Monday that quarterback Andrew Luck will miss the season opener Sunday at the Los Angeles Rams but declined to say when the Colts’ franchise quarterback might be ready to play.

Luck hasn’t taken a snap and hasn’t thrown to a teammate in nine months while rehabbing from offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder. For now, Scott Tolzien will start, Ballard said.

Steelers: Pro Bowl running back Le’Veon Bell signed his $12.1 million franchise tender, clearing him to return. Bell worked out with the rest of the team Monday, but his status for Pittsburgh’s season opener Sunday in Cleveland is uncertain.

Giants: Receiver Odell Beckham, who has not practiced since spraining his left ankle in a preseason game Aug. 21, rode a stationary bike during the portion of practice that was open to media. The team has not announced his status for the opener Sunday night against the Cowboys.

Bills: Starting QB Tyrod Taylor took the next step in recovering from a concussion by returning to practice. How Taylor feels over the next few days will determine whether he will be cleared to open the season Sunday against the New York Jets.

Jets: New York placed linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin on injured reserve and re-signed linebacker Bruce Carter. Mauldin, entering his third season, has been dealing with a back injury that ailed him for most of training camp. He didn’t play in any preseason games.

Cardinals: Veteran punter Andy Lee, 35, signed a twoyear deal and will be reunited with former teammate Phil Dawson, 42, for whom Lee was the holder for two years in San Francisco.

Rams: Los Angeles claimed quarterback Brandon Allen off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Allen will back up Jared Goff and Sean Mannion. Also, the Rams waived receiver Nelson Spruce after reaching an injury settlement with him.
