Comcast to expand fiber internet service

Expansion of network in Gwinnett should be done by end of year.

Comcast announced Tuesday it will expand its fastest fiber internet network for business customers in Gwinnett County.

The company said the expansion of its 10-gigabit business network — to areas including downtown Suwanee, the Gwinnett Place Mall area in Duluth, the Gwinnett County Airport and the city of Duluth — should be completed by the end of the year.

Comcast, Google Fiber, AT&T and others have ramped up developmen­t of their fiber optic networks to bring increased speeds to communitie­s across metro Atlanta as consumers and businesses demand greater broadband capacity.

Shawn Geagan, Comcast vice president of business developmen­t, said the company’s expansion “nicely supports” the county’s efforts to attract business.

Charlotte Nash, chairman of the Gwinnett commission, said the county is excited about the expansion.

“We hope that this is only the beginning of more robust networks across Gwinnett,” she said.
