Report: Red Sox admit to scheme

Boston used an Apple Watch to steal signs from Yankees.

The Boston Red Sox reportedly admitted to MLB on Tuesday they improperly used electronic devices to steal signs from the New York Yankees.

The New York Times reported the Red Sox used an Apple Watch to relay signs by the Yankees catchers during a series last month at Fenway Park.

The newspaper said the Red Sox told MLB investigators that Boston manager John Farrell, GM Dave Dombrowski and other team executives were not aware of the scheme.

Commissioner Rob Manfred said he wanted to get the matter resolved quickly, but didn’t comment about possible penalties.

Dombrowski said it was the first time that a team he’d worked for had been formally accused of stealing signs

Diamondbacks: Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Lou Gehrig and Mike Schmidt did it. So did All-Star sluggers Josh Hamilton, Carlos Delgado and Gil Hodges.

Add J.D. Martinez’s name to the list of players with four home runs in a game.

Martinez’s power show tied a major league record and jolted Dodger Stadium on a warm, unusually muggy Monday night. He struck out his first time up for Arizona, and then homered four times in a row in the Diamondbacks’ 13-0 victory.

“It’s one of those things where, when you work really hard, you kind of just find that perfect swing,” the Cuban outfielder said.

Martinez became the 18th player in MLB history to accomplish the feat and first for Arizona. He is the first to do it since Scooter Gennett of the Reds hit four straight homers on June 6 against St. Louis.

“You can’t believe it after it keeps happening — second, third and finally the fourth time. It was amazing,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said.

Martinez hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Rich Hill, then hit solo homers off Pedro Baez in the seventh and Josh Fields in the eighth.

Martinez capped his huge night by pulling a two-run homer to left field off Wilmer Font, tying his career high with six RBIs.

“I thought there was no way they were going to throw him something he could hit,” winning pitcher Robbie Ray said. “But sure enough he got a ball right where he wanted it and he put it in the seats.”

Martinez, 30, has 34 home runs this season, 18 since being traded from Detroit to the Diamondbacks in midJuly for minor leaguers.

Cubs: Pitcher Jake Arrieta underwent an MRI on his right hamstring, and manager Joe Maddon said his team’s ace could have his next start pushed back. Arrieta is scheduled to start on Saturday against Milwaukee at Wrigley Field. If Arrieta can’t go on, Mike Montgomery would fill in.

White Sox: Infielder Yoan Moncada (bone contusion on right shin) was activated from the 10-day disabled list, and left-hander Derek Holland was requested waivers for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.

Astros: Catcher Evan Gattis (right wrist soreness) and right-hander Michael Feliz (right shoulder discomfort) could come off the DL this weekend at Oakland, manager A.J. Hinch said.
