Top pick in draft may miss opener against Steelers.

CoCo Vandeweghe (above) became the third American into the U.S. Open women’s semifinals, beating topseeded Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (4), 6-3. No. 9 Venus Williams faces unseeded Sloane Stephens in one allAmerican matchup today; the U.S. Open has a chance at its first final between two Americans since Serena Williams beat sister Venus in 2002.

Myles Garrett’s big plans to sack Ben Roethlisberger in the season opener may be on hold.

At this point, everything is suddenly in question.

Cleveland’s rookie defensive end, who showed signs of living up to enormous expec- tations as the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, sustained an ankle injury Wednesday, leaving his status for Sunday’s opener against Pittsburgh in doubt.

Coach Hue Jackson opened his news briefing by saying Garrett “was limited today with an ankle,” but he did not provide any specifics

about the injury other than to say the 21-year-old did not finish practice.

Jackson was evasive when asked about his level of concern for Garrett, who got hurt on the first full prac- tice of Steelers week.

“I don’t want to make med- ical decisions. I am not very good at them so we will see where we are as we move through the week.” Mary Kay Cabot of Cleve-

land.com reported there’s worry that Garrett’s reg

ular-season debut will be delayed well beyond the opener. Garrett is headed for further tests on the ankle, which will likely include an MRI, and a team source said

the club is “worried the injury could sideline him for weeks.”

Garrett sustained what he feared was a serious left foot sprain during the spring, but he didn’t miss the start of training camp and has dazzled with his speed and strength. During his junior season at Texas A&M, Garrett was severely limited with a left ankle injury.

Seahawks: Defensive end Michael Bennett is accusing Las Vegas police of racially motivated excessive force after he says he was threatened at gunpoint following a report that shots were heard at a casino hotel.

Bennett posted a Twitter account Wednesday saying police singled him out as he was running from a sharp sound following the Aug. 26 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. The 6-foot-4 defensive end says he was handcuffed face-down on the ground after one officer held a gun to his head saying he would blow his head off if he moved. Bennett, who was released without charges, called it a “traumatic” experience.

Officer Jacinto Rivera said Las Vegas police are checking for video and written reports but couldn’t immediately verify Bennett’s account.

Bennett spoke briefly Wednesday at the Seahawks’ facility, saying he had constant thoughts of his wife and kids while being detained.

“It sucks that the country that we live in now sometimes you get profiled for the color of your skin,” Bennett said.

Police later attributed the report of gunfire to the sound of velvet rope stands falling.

Bucs-Dolphins: Tampa Bay and Miami will open the season with a hurricane-im- posed bye. Their opener scheduled for Sunday was postponed by the NFL until Nov. 19 because of Hurricane Irma.

“This is bigger than football,” Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston said. “I just want everyone to be safe. Football is not important right now.”

Switching the game to Week 11 was possible because both teams were on a bye.

Giants: Three-time Pro Bowler Odell Beckham Jr. is itching to play in the season opener against Dallas and just as uncertain whether his injured left ankle will allow him to go.

While the star receiver was back on the field stretching with his teammates for the first time since being hurt more than two weeks ago, the 24-year-old was not able to practice. He spent most of the time on the sideline working with trainers.

Bills: Will have their starting quarterback for Sunday’s season opener against the Jets. Tyrod Taylor was cleared from concussion protocol and coach Sean McDermott said Taylor will start for Buffalo in Week 1.

Bears: No. 2 overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky will open the season as Chicago’s No. 2 quarterback. Coach John Fox said Trubisky will back up Mike Glennon when the Bears host the defend- ing NFC champion Falcons.

Jets: Added a familiar face to their receiving group in veteran Jeremy Kerley, who signed a one-year deal to reunite with the team for which he played his first five NFL seasons.
