Vols’ Jennings is out ‘indefinitely’

Wide receiver was injured in Monday’s victory over Tech.

-

Tennessee coach Butch Jones said injured wide receiver Jauan Jennings is out “indefinitely.”

Jones didn’t specify the nature of Jennings’ injury, which kept the junior from playing in the second half of the 25th-ranked Volunteers’ 42-41 double-overtime victory over Georgia Tech on Monday.

The coach also offered no timetable for when Jennings might return.

Jennings had 40 receptions for 580 yards and seven touchdowns last season, including the go-ahead score in a victory over Florida and a Hail Mary reception to beat Georgia.

Jennings caught three passes for 17 yards Monday before his injury.

He becomes Tennessee’s third projected starter to have a significant injury this season. Tennessee lost offensive tackle Chance Hall and linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. to season-ending knee injuries during the preseason.

Jennings’ injury means Tennessee will be relying heavily on sophomore Marquez Callaway to build on his breakthrough performance against Georgia Tech.

After catching just one pass last season, Callaway, from Warner Robins, had four receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia Tech to help the Vols erase a 14-point, second-half deficit.

Memphis: Linebacker Jackson Dillon will miss the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury.

Dillon hurt his shoulder last week during a season-opening 37-29 victory over Louisiana-Monroe.

Dillon, a fifth-year senior from Ringling, Okla., had played in only one game last season due to a knee injury.

He made a combined 31 starts for Memphis from 2013-15.

Houston-UTSA canceled: Officials at Houston and UTSA said the schools won’t play their game that was postponed because of Hurricane Harvey.

The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 2 in San Antonio’s Alamodome.

The schools had called off that game as Houston was flooded by rains from Harvey, and had hoped to reschedule.

The schools announced Wednesday the game won’t be played this season, leaving both with just 11 games on the regular-season schedule.
