Atlanta’s Sloan joins ‘Daily Show’

Meadowcreek High School grad and stand-up comic Dulce Sloan has been named the newest correspondent on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”

She is set to debut this week on the show hosted by Trevor Noah.

As a comic, she definitely has buzz, named a one of the top 10 comedians to watch by Rolling Stone magazine and a 2017 Comedian to Watch by Time Out Los Angeles. In December 2015, Sloan took top honors in the 12th annual StandUp NBC comedy showcase.

Sloan grew up in metro Atlanta, living in Austell, College Park, Norcross and Stone Mountain. She attended college at Brenau in Gainesville. The alumni magazine wrote an extensive profile of her last year.

For several years, she worked on her stand-up in local clubs around town including Laughing Skull Lounge in Midtown. She came in second at that club’s annual showcase competition in 2015. Sloan moved to Los Angeles last year.

“She’s an old soul,” said Marshall Chiles, who owns Laughing Skull. “And she works hard. I knew she had a chance to make it when she told me she had sold her car to buy a minivan so she could ferry comics to gigs. She said that was a way to guarantee some time on stage. That’s the level of investment she gave herself.”

Ann-Carol Pence, cofounder of Lawrenceville’s Aurora Theatre, said Sloan interned with them while she was in high school and has performed there many times over the years. “As a huge fan of ‘The Daily Show,’ I am ready to watch the political mayhem she is going to unleash,” Pence told the AJC. “Dulce is not afraid to call our country out for the lack of compassion we are showing people of color, to women, to gay people, you name it. There’s a lot of vitriol out there.”
