Pedrodia : Sign stealing is part of the game

-

If the Red Sox are con- cerned about a Major League Baseball investigation into using an Apple Watch to steal pitch signs from the Yankees,

they aren’t showing it. A day after The New York Times reported the Yankees had filed a complaint about the practice, the AL East lead- ers expressed little concern

about possible punishment. “It’s part of the game,”

said second baseman Dustin Pedroia, one of the players

implicated in the scheme. “Our adjustment to that stuff is: go out to the mound and change the signs . ... It’s been around a long, long time. We were doing that at Douglas Junior High School, where I played. So I don’t think this should be news to anybody.”

Sign-stealing is in base- ball and is not prohibited, but the use of technology to do it is against the rules.

The Red Sox filed a counter-complaint that the Yan- kees used TV cameras to help them steal signs.

Reds: MLB stolen base leader Billy Hamilton broke his left thumb when he was trying to bunt in the first inning. The outfielder exited in the third and was put on the 10-day disabled list.

Cardinals: St. Louis acquired right-hander Juan Nicasio from Philadelphia for minor league infielder Eliezer Alvarez. Nicasio, 31, joined the Phillies last week on a waiver claim from the

a 2.79 Pirates.ERA in He an is NL-lead-3-5 with ing 67 games this season, while holding opponents to a .218 average. Nicasio is a free agent at the end of the season and would not be eligible for postseason play. ■ Third baseman Matt

Shoemaker (right shoulder strain) had an MRI and it appears he’ll be out until at least the weekend.

Giants: Third baseman Pablo Sandoval went 0 for 4 with a walk Tuesday and is hitless in his last 37 at-bats. It’s tied for the longest streak by a Giants player since John- nie LeMaster went hitless in 37 at-bats in 1984. Diamondbacks: Tues- day’s win over the Dodgers was Arizona’s 12th straight, tying its franchise record for most consecutive wins set in June 2003. The Diamond- backs also haven’t trailed for 98 straight innings, tying the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers for the third-longest streak by a major league team since 1912.
