Albies homers, but Braves fall

After a 30-minute rain delay, starter Mike Foltynewic­z lasted just four innings and exited with a cut on the tip of his right middle finger in a 5-2 loss to the Nationals. Ozzie Albies extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run homer.

Georgia State game canceled

Memphis has canceled its Sept. 30 game at Georgia State as part of a schedule reshufflin­g orchestrat­ed by the American Athletic Conference involving seven of its teams. Despite the existing contract between Memphis and Georgia State, the AAC reschedule­d the Memphis-UCF game for Sept. 30 after their Sept. 9 contest was postponed by Hurricane Irma. Per the contract, Georgia State will receive $1.1 million in cancellati­on fees and expenses.

Atlanta reveals Super Bowl logo

Atlanta’s host committee for the 2019 Super Bowl has taken a small but symbolic step in its early preparatio­ns for the big event: adopting an official logo. The committee unveiled Thursday its red-and-gray logo, which prominentl­y features the city’s name and a representa­tion of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium retractabl­e roof. “This now gives us an opportunit­y to get the message out that we’re open for business and working hard to get ready for Super Bowl LII,” said Brett Daniels, chief operating officer of the Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee.

Goodell will attend opener

NFL Commission­er Roger Goodell will attend the Falcons’ first regular-season game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday night. It will be Goodell’s first look at the $1.5 billion stadium since cranes were removed from what is now the playing field. “He toured the new stadium in January and is looking forward to Sunday night,”NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

Watson makes first NFL start

Deshaun Watson, who played at Gainesvill­e High School and won a national championsh­ip with Clemson last season, made his first NFL start Thursday night for the Houston Texans against the Bengals in Cincinnati. Go online for the final report from the game.
