Giants pitcher Cain to retire
Three-time All-Star will make his last start Saturday.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain said he’ll retire after his start at home Saturday against the San Diego Padres.
Cain informed teammates of his decision in a closed meeting before Wednesday’s game at Arizona. Cain pitchedthefifirst perfectgame in Giants history in 2012.
Cain, 3-11 this season, made his big league debut with the Giants in 2005. He pitched in two of the Giants’ three winning World Series appearances since 2010. The right-hander has a career record of 104-118 with a 3.69 ERA.
The three-time All-Star is nearing the end of his contract with the Giants, who have an option for onemore season.
The Giants will honor Cain’s career at Sunday’s regular-seasonfifinale, which also falls on Cain’s 33rd birthday.
Diamondbacks: J.D. Martinez tied RalphKiner’s 1949 NL record for home runs in Septemberwith16. Martinez has 45 homers this season, 29with the Diamondbacks, who acquired himfrom the Tigers on July 18. His 36 RBIs this month set an Arizona record, surpassing LuisGonzalez’s 35 in June 2001.
Yankees: A fan sitting behind home plate was ejected from Yankee Stadiumfor shouting the location of pitches during New York’s 6-1 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Gary Sanchez, who was batting in the eighth inning when the fan was ejected, and Rays catcher Wilson Ramos said the fan had been yelling in Spanish: “Outside! Outside!” Ramos said the spectator’s shouts were accurate.
Marlins: MLB owners unanimously approved the $1.2 billion sale of the franchise by Jeffffrey Loria to an investment group led by Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman. The deal needed 75 percent approval.
Dodgers: Veteran first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, 35, is expected to miss the entire postseasonwith back tightness — an injury that has plagued him all season.
Twins: Third baseman Miguel Sano took 60 swings as he tries to recover in time for the postseason. Sano has been on the DL since Aug. 20 with a stress reaction in his left shin. Sano is batting .267with28homers, 77 RBIs and a team-high 170 strikeouts in 111 games.
Indians: Michael Brantley’s chances of playing in the postseason have taken a surprising turn. The All-Star outfifielder, out since Aug. 9 with a sprained ankle ligament, did some running and manager Terry Francona said there’s a possibility Brantley could be playing in games later this week.
Astros: Justin Verlander is 5-0witha 1.06ERAin his fifive starts since being acquired fromDetroit on Aug. 31. The right-hander makes his next start in the ALDS next week.
Pirates: AndrewMcCutchen’s eight-RBI game Tuesday was one off the franchise record and the most by a Pirate since Jason Bay in 2004. McCutchen also hit his fifirst career grand slam (after 5,016 at-bats and 201 homers) in the 10-1 win over the Orioles.
Tigers: Detroit signed the son of Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez to a minor league deal. Pedro Martinez Jr., 17, is a third baseman from the Dominican Republic.
