Evans an interim AD at Maryland

- — SETH EMERSON

More than seven years after leaving the University of Georgia in disgrace, Damon Evans is running a major-conference athletic department. At least temporarily.

Evans, executive athletic director at Maryland since November 2014, is now running the Terrapins’ athletic department on an interim basis. Kevin Anderson, the school’s athletic director, will be on a sabbatical for six months, The Washington Post reported on Monday. Anderson, it has been reported, was interested in returning to his West Coast roots as AD at Cal, and it led to a falling-out with the Maryland president. There is no indication of whether Anderson will return after the six-month sabbatical.

A former Georgia football player, Evans went into administration and worked in UGA’s athletic association. He was promoted to the top spot in 2004 when Vince Dooley was forced out by then-president Michael Adams.

Evans had just receiveda contract extension the summer of 2010 when he was arrested for DUI in Atlanta. Lurid details that emerged from the arrest contributed to UGA firing Evans.

Greg McGarity, then Florida’s associate athletics director, was hired by Georgia in August 2010.

Evans moved to Boston to work for a company outside college athletics, then later was hired by Maryland as Anderson’s top assistant.
