Q: How did Georgia Tech score 222 points in that record game against Cumberland? Did the game have a lot of turnovers? How many yards of total offense did Georgia Tech have? How did the Jackets have that much time to score 222 points?

—Lance DeLoach, Thomaston

A: In the 1916 game, the Yellow Jackets scored 32 touchdowns and Cumberland committed 15 turnovers (nine fumbles lost, six interceptions).

Cumberland, a school in Lebanon, Tenn., had eliminated the football program a second time in the spring of 1916 after a new school president made budget cuts, but still had the Tech game on the schedule. A student manager at Cumberland gathered 13 students, including fraternity brothers, to play, according to published reports.

Georgia Tech scored at least 42 points in every quarter, with 63 points in both the first and second quarters, 54 points in the third quarter and 42 in the fourth, according to ramblinwreck.com.

The Yellow Jackets gained 978 yards, all rushing. The lopsided halftime score convinced Georgia Tech coach John Heisman to shorten the third and fourth quarters from 15 to 12 minutes.
