Schroder likely out tonight

NEW YORK — Dennis Schroder likely won’t play in today’s game at Miami after sustaining what appeared to be a bone bruise in his left foot Sunday during the final minutes of the Hawks’ 116104 loss at Brooklyn.

X-rays Sunday revealed nothing serious, Schroder said, and he will aim to be back on the floor later this week, possibly for Thursday’s game at Chicago, the final road game of a five-game swing to open the season. The Hawks’ home opener is Friday against Denver.

“That’s my plan (to return Thursday), I don’t know how it works out,” Schroder said in the locker room after he iced his left ankle and spoke to Hawks’ medical personnel. “Let the team try to win the game in Miami and then we going to see day by day.”

He added: “They told me just now about the X-ray, it was nothing serious.”

Schroder, who entered averaging 26.5 points and 6.0 assists, scored 17 points on 5-of-22 shooting with eight assists in the loss.

With 3:37 remaining, he drove to the basket and tried to draw contact but landed awkwardly on Caris LeVert’s foot. He fell to the floor clutching his left ankle and had to be helped off the court. He had six points in the final period.

Collins steps up: Rookie John Collins, the 19th overall pick in the draft, had the first double-double of his NBA career. The 6-foot-10 rookie out of Wake Forest had 14 points and 13 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench in the Hawks’ loss.

“It felt good out there,” Collins said. “Running up and down the court, do what I usually do, be active around the rim, crash the glass, dunk the ball, went to the free line, so it felt like a normal Wake Forest day. Hopefully that happens a lot more.”

Collins just about averaged a double-double in his sophomore season at Wake Forest, posting 19.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
