Two teenagers have been charged in connection with a street race that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy, according to Gainesville police.

Brandon Eduardo Sanchez and Kevin A. Padilla Alvarez were racing along Millside Parkway just before 11:45 p.m. Monday when Sanchez lost control of his vehicle, crossed the median and hit a tree, Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

Sanchez’s passenger, Jesus Martinez Mondragon, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

Sanchez, 18, of Gainesville, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in stable condition and released.

Authorities learned he had only a learner’s permit and arrested him on charges of first degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, racing, failure to maintain lane, striking a fixed object and violation of class CP license.

Alvarez, 17, was not injured, and did not have any passengers in his car, police said.

He was arrested on charges of street racing, reckless driving and being party to the crime of first degree vehicular homicide.

“The case remains under investigation,” Holbrook said. “Additional charges may be forthcoming.”

Alvarez and Sanchez are being held in the Hall County Jail.

“This is a sad reminder,” Holbrook said, “that speed and careless driving are a deadly mix.”
