Manning not willing to hand over QB job
Veteran wants to play on as 1-7 Giants look toward future.
Eli Manning is not ready to sit just yet.
A day after Giants coach Ben McAdoo floated the idea he would consider using some young players, and no position was being excluded, the two-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player said he definitely wants to keep playing.
Manning said Tuesday after the team’s workout he didn’t hear coach Ben McAdoo’s comments on Monday’s conference call.
“My goal is to prepare every week and do my job,” Manning said. “He said that he’s got faith in me and to keep grinding.
“So that’s what we’re doing. I want to play. That’s what I like to do. I like to play football and play quarterback. I understand that I got a job to do and I got to do it better and do it well and get wins and if you don’t, everybody’s job is up for grabs in this league.”
McAdoo said he was impressed Manning was a little taken aback by the suggestion of a possible replacement.
“What do you expect?” McAdoo said. “I’m glad he said that. He’s a pro football player, that’s what he should be saying. Eli, he’s our quarterback. I have a lot of confidence in Eli. That hasn’t changed. But that doesn’t mean at some point in time, we won’t throw another guy in there to get a look at him.”
Manning has made 207 consecutive starts going back to his rookie season. If he starts this week, he will tie his brother Peyton for the second-longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history. Brett Favre holds the record with 297 consecutive starts.
The Giants, still stinging from the 51-17 loss to the Rams, travel to face the 0-9 49ers on Sunday.
If McAdoo wants to go to Davis Webb at quarterback, the third-round draft pick from Cal said he’s ready.
“I’m here to help the team win. That’s my role right now,” Webb said.
Meantime, the Giants reinstated cornerback Janoris Jenkins from the suspended list. Jenkins missed last weekend’s game against his former team when he didn’t report back in time for Tuesday’s practice after New York’s bye week.
Broncos: Coach Vance Joseph announced he’s sticking with Brock Osweiler as his starting quarterback despite his pair of costly interceptions in Denver’s 51-23 flop in Philadelphia.
Joseph said he isn’t committing to any quarterback beyond Sunday, when the Broncos host the Patriots.
Chargers: Activated middle linebacker Denzel Perryman from injured reserve, paving the way for his expected return to the field Sunday against the Jaguars. Perryman sat out the first half of the season rehabbing from surgery on his left ankle in August.
Texans: Signed free-agent quarterback Josh Johnson and released Matt McGloin. The moves come a day after coach Bill O’Brien said the team had discussed the possibility of adding Colin Kaepernick in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to rookie Deshaun Watson.
Bears: Placed tight end Zach Miller — recovering from surgery to save his left leg — on injured reserve. Miller was released from the hospital Monday but likely faces more surgery to repair ligament damage in the knee.
The Bears signed tight end Ben Braunecker to fill Miller’s spot on the roster.
49ers: Signed defensive back Antone Exum Jr. to a one-year contract and placed offensive lineman Garry Gilliam (knee) on injured reserve. The Niners are shorthanded in the secondary after safeties Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward suffered season-ending broken arms.
Late Monday
Lions 30, (at) Packers 17: Matthew Stafford put on a quarterback clinic for Detroit at Lambeau Field. Aaron Rodgers could only watch from the sideline with his broken collarbone.
Stafford passed for 361 yards and two touchdowns to Marvin Jones, and the Lions snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over offensively challenged Green Bay.
Stafford was 26 of 33, including 12 of 14 in the first half with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jones.
Ameer Abdullah added a 4-yard touchdown run for Detroit (4-4).
Green Bay (4-4) finally got in the end zone on Brett Hundley’s 1-yard quarterback sneak with 9:52 left.
Hundley finished 26 of 38 for 245 yards.
