New electric Tesla Model X represents pure innovation

- SPECIAL TO STATESMAN CARS By Olivia Olsen

Tesla Inc., more commonly known by its former name Tesla Motors, is one of the industry leaders in automotive innovation.

Though the Palo Alto company is more than just an automaker, its continued push for fully electric vehicles has proven to be one of the company’s greatest achievements. Founded in 2003 by alternative energy heavyweight Elon Musk and engineer JB Straubel, among others, Tesla has risen to the top of the luxury automotive industry.

Twelve years after its founding in 2015, Tesla introduced a stateof-the-art crossover, the Model X, that is more than worthy of inventor Nikola Tesla’s namesake. Priding itself on a svelte body that challenges the typical suburban crossover, this vehicle offers seating for a range of family sizes with trims available in five to seven-passenger configurations. As one of the top ranking plug-in cars for environmentally conscious nations such as Norway, the Model X is an ideal vehicle for families concerned about limiting their carbon footprint.

The all-new 2017 Tesla Model X is not only a sight to behold, but an experience to be felt. Touted as one of the safest, quickest, and most reliable crossover SUVs in modern history, the Model X is everything a family on the go could ask for.

Choosing between storage and seating is never an issue with the Model X. Keeping with the five to seven-seat configuration, the Model X’s optional third row and second row middle seat both fold down to create as much cargo space as needed.

The very design of the Model

X is safety focused. A front-end trunk acts as a “crumple zone” in case of a head-on collision while the floor-mounted battery reduces the risk of rollovers. Additionally, the battery’s support structure acts as extra cushioning from side impacts. The Model X also boasts a medical grade HEPA air filter to ensure that the cabin air your family is breathing is void of bacteria, viruses, and allergens.

What’s more, the Model X holds the longest full charge range of electric vehicles in its class. With 295 miles to a charge and access to all of Tesla’s worldwide charging stations, you can rest assured that you’ll reach your destination, no matter how far the drive. With Tesla’s charge estimator, a full charge will take less than 10 minutes and cost around $13 but will save you over $20 in gas.

A focus on technological features can sometimes let the body’s design fall by the wayside, but the Model X refuses to rest on its laurels. It may not have a flux capacitor (yet), but the Model X can look just as cool with falcon doors that can open in even the tightest of spaces to allow easier access to the second and optional third row. Add in a panoramic windshield (the largest in production) to eliminate obstructed views and allow you to see the world in a different light, and you’ve got a design that not only looks enticing — it’s functional, as well.

However, the true testament to innovation within the Model X and all other Tesla vehicles is its self-driving capability. Enhanced Autopilot with over the air software updates creates a driving experience unlike any other, and one that is safer than any human driver could create. The Model X uses 360 cameras and advanced technology to steer, accelerate, decelerate, and park by itself. In fact, with the latest 8.1 software update, you can actually summon your car to meet you after you’ve parked. No more darting out to the parking lot in the rain.

With a focus on safety, innovation, and green initiatives, the newest Tesla Model X is an SUV crossover that leaves nothing to be desired.
