MundoHispánico lauded by national association
When do you know that something is truly news worthy? For MundoHispánico, this is easy to recognize, whether it be a call from a reader wanting to report some sort of injustice, or when we realize the impact a topic will have amongst our readers.
Sometimes it takes time to investigate these types of claims, but on other occasions we are on the scene in seconds with a camera, microphone and pen in hand.
That is how, one day at a time, we are able to forge ahead as witnesses to our community’s history. To this country’s history. That has been MundoHispánico’s mission for the last 38 years, since the newspaper was founded in 1979.
It is a labor of love that has yielded fruits in the last few years, as our publication has been the recipient of numerous José Martí awards, a recognition in journalistic excellence that is awarded by the National Association of Hispanic Publications and which highlights outstanding contributions by the Latino press throughout the United States.
MundoHispánico had previously earned 17 awards, but that num- ber climbed to 22 this November. In total, the publication has been recognized with Gold in the following categories: Outstanding Multiple Article Series (reporters Johanes Roselló, Samantha Díaz and Mario Guevara), Outstanding Photo (photojournalist Miguel Martínez), Outstanding Entertainment Section (reporter Alberto Brown and graphic designer, Daniela Constantino), Outstanding Local Business Article (reporter Samantha Díaz), Outstanding Education Article (reporter Johanes Roselló), Outstanding Cultural Article (Leslie Froelich) and Outstanding Video Promoting Your Publication.
MundoHispánico earned Silver in the categories of: Outstanding Sports Section, Outstanding Event for ‘Personajes Destacados 2016,’ Outstanding Local Political Article (reporter Johanes Roselló), Outstanding National/International Business Article (reporter Alberto Brown), Outstanding Health Article (reporter Mario Guevara), Outstanding Entertainment Article (reporter Alberto Brown), Outstanding Editorial Video Editorial (reporter Mario Guevara), and Outstanding Community Photo, Outstanding News Event Photo Essay, and Outstanding Cultural Photo (all by photojournalist Miguel Martínez).
In the Bronze category, MundoHispánico was recognized for: Outstanding Hispanic Success Story ( Johanes Roselló), Outstanding Editorial Column (Editor María A. Bastidas), Outstanding Spanish Language Weekly Newspaper, Outstanding Hispanic Magazine for ‘Mundo Legal,’ and Outstanding Design – Magazine for ‘Mundo Salud.’
In addition, one of our national editors, Marlon Sorto, was recognized for his work with our sister publication ¡Ahora Sí!, in Austin, Texas. Sorto was awarded Gold in the category of Outstanding Local Political Article and won Silver in the categories of Outstanding Multiple Article Series, Outstanding Editorial Video and Outstanding Hispanic Success Story.
