Where championship will be available for streaming

- By Rodney Ho rho@ajc.com

A vast majority of viewers will still watch the College Football Playoff National Championship tonight on ESPN the traditional way: on a TV via their cable or satellite subscription. But there are plenty of streaming options as well, most of which offer a free month trial:

Sling TV: The cheapest option is Sling Orange with 30 channels at $20 a month, and it includes ESPN.

DirectTV Now: Its most basic plan, “Live a Little” with 60 channels for $35 a month, features ESPN.

YouTubeTV: At $35 a month, you get 51 channels plus ESPN.

PlayStation Vue: Its lowestcost option called Access with 43 channels is $39.99 a month, and ESPN is included.

Hulu with Live TV: Pricing is $39.99 a month, including ESPN and 50 other channels plus Hulu’s full library of on-demand shows and movies.

WatchESPN app: You can also catch the game via WatchESPN on your computer or the WatchESPN app. But you’ll need to prove you have a pay TV subscription or any of the five streaming services just mentioned.

Some people on social media complained about the streaming experience during the Rose Bowl this past Monday on the WatchESPN app.

Mike Tatterson on Twitter wrote: “#WatchESPN is terrible. I heard the rose bowl was a great game, I couldn’t tell from the constant buffering. You can step up from dial up Internet streaming whenever you’re ready #ESPN.”

Bruce Turner noted: “@espn Worst Rose Bowl experience ever due to horrible streaming even on my high speed fiber network. Absolutely horrible.”

But an ESPN spokeswoman said it heard nothing out of the ordinary.

“We did not experience any widespread streaming issues during this week’s bowl games,” wrote spokeswoman Kristie Adler via email. “Any issues that individuals may be experiencing could be due to a number of factors, including internet speed, Wi-Fi or cellular data connectivity, device model, etc.”

If there are any problems tonight, she said fans should contact ESPN Customer Care on Twitter at @ESPNFANSUPPORT or call 1-888-549-3776.
