School zone boundaries meeting set for Jan. 17

-

City Schools Decatur is hosting a community meeting on the re-zoning of elementary school boundaries, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Decatur High School Cafeteria at 310 North McDonough St.

B eginning in the 2019-20 school year, the city’s five lower elementary schools at Clairemont, Glennwood, Oakhurst, Winnona Park and Westchester will lop off a grade and go K-2. The 3-5 upper elementary schools will be at Fifth Avenue (currently a 4/5 school) and the new building at Talley Street and South Columbia Drive.

The locations of both 3-5 schools are south of the railroad tracks. One of the primary challenges in rezoning is determining if all students in a specific lower elementary are assigned to the same 3-5 school, or if some lower elementary student bodies get broken up.

This is CSD’s first grade reconfiguration since 2004-05 when the current K-3/4-5 model was adopted.

CSD emphasizes that no decisions have been made. There are currently five re-zoning options on the table.

Superintendent David Dude said he hopes the school board will approve the final boundaries during either its March or April meeting.
