Report: Frazier leaves Yanks for two-year, $17M from Mets

Twins lose Santana until mid-April for finger surgery.

Free-agent third baseman Todd Frazier is switching sides close to home, set to join the New York Mets and take over a spot that’s been in flux since David Wright got injured. Frazier and the Mets reportedly agreed on a two-year contract for $17 million.

Frazier, who was a 1998 Little League World Series champion in nearby Toms River, N.J., and later starred at Rutgers, finished up last season with the Yankees. The Yankees got him in July in a trade with the White Sox, and Frazier hit a combined .213 with 27 home runs, 76 RBIs and a career-best .344 on-base percentage.

Frazier, a two-time All-Star turns 32 next week, hit 35 homers for Cincinnati in 2015 and won the All-Star Home Run Derby. He set career highs with 40 homers and 98 RBIs for the White Sox in 2016.

Twins: Right-hander Ervin Santana will miss the start of the regular season after surgery on his right middle finger. The right-hander, 35, needed surgery after experiencing discomfort during a bullpen session last week. He is expected to need 10 to 12 weeks of rehabilitation, which would keep him out of the rotation until at least mid-April.

Santana was an All-Star last year, going 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA in 211⅓ innings in more than 33 starts. He led the majors with five complete games and three shutouts.

Orioles: Second baseman Jonathan Schoop agreed to an $8.5 million, one-year contract. Schoop, 26, was a first-time All-Star last season when he hit .293 with 32 homers and 105 RBIs. He played in 160 games last season after participating in all 162 in 2016.

Reds: The team won their salary-arbitration case against third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who gets a raise from $595,000 to $3.75 million rather than his request for $4.2 million. Suarez hit .260 last season and set career highs with 26 homers and 82 RBIs.

Giants: Home run king Barry Bonds, 53, will have his No. 25 jersey retired Aug. 11 when his former Pirates visit San Francisco. The seven-time NL MVP will become only the 12th player from the New York or San Francisco Giants to have his number retired, joining Orlando Cepeda (30), Juan Marichal (27), Willie Mays (24), Willie McCovey (44) and Gaylord Perry (36) with San Francisco, and Bill Terry (3), Mel Ott (4), Carl Hubbell (11) and Monte Irvin (20) from New York. Christy Mathewson and John McGraw are honored despite playing before numbers were on uniforms.

Yankees: The team said gates will open three hours before spring training home games in Tampa, Fla., allowing fans to watch Aaron Judge and new teammate Giancarlo Stanton take batting practice. In the past, the gates opened two hours before the first pitch.

Rangers: Veteran infielder Darwin Barney agreed to a minor league contract.
