Q&A on the News
Q: Sometime in the past year or so, it was reported that a large soccer complex was scheduled to be built near Stonecrest Mall. Can you give me an update?
—Beth Rogers, Covington
A: The soccer complex is part of Atlanta Sports City, a 197-acre sports and entertainment facility planned next to Stonecrest Mall.
Developers announced the $200 million project in February 2017, promising 22 football and soccer fields, a 15,000-seat stadium, and an indoor facility for basketball, volleyball and other sports.
“The permit process is underway with the city of Stonecrest,” Tee Foxx, public relations manager for Atlanta Sports City, told Q&A on the News via email. “At present, we are working collaboratively with the city’s planning and zoning departments on permit delivery schedules and timelines We anticipate groundbreaking, shortly, in the coming months.”
Since its original announcement, Atlanta Sports City has added 10 attractions, including retail stores, a Sea Quest aquarium, a Top Golf Swing Suite and MMA Bar & Grill, Foxx wrote.
In October 2017, the complex’s developers purchased the former Kohl’s building and 12 more acres near the mall. Construction on the Kohl’s site is set to be done by April.
The field house and a 5,000-seat outdoor stadium are set to be finished in 2018, with other projects completed in 2019, Foxx added.
