School board approves seven new principals

The Cherokee County School Board has approved seven educators to fill principal’s slots at the district’s schools.

Kerry Martin and Robert Van Alstyne will succeed Darrell Herring and Elliott Berman, who are retiring, as principals at River Ridge and Sequoyah high schools, respective­ly.

Martin, the current principal at Mill Creek Middle School, will be succeeded by Matthew May, now assistant principal at Sequoyah High. Van Alstyne will move up from assistant principal at Etowah High School.

Amy Graham, currently principal at Johnston Elementary School, will become staffing director in the district’s Human Resources Division. She succeeds Cathy Elliott, who is retiring. Taking Graham’s place as principal will be Laura Akers, currently assistant principal at Little River Elementary School.

At the Preschool Centers, Assistant Principal Victoria Thom will succeed Principal Donna Adams, who is retiring.

Kim Montalbano, principal at Woodstock Elementary School, will move to Indian Knoll Elementary School to take the place of retiring Principal Ann Gazell. Matthew Freedman, now principal of Park Street Elementary School in Marietta, will succeed Montalbano­as principal at Woodstock.

The school board will appoint assistant principals in April, officials said.
