WITHERSPOON, Gilbert Harrington

Witherspoon, a man of wit and wisdom, beloved by family, friends, church and community, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018 in Beaufort, SC. He was born in Nashville, TN on January 6, 1935.
Mr. Witherspoon was a 1952 graduate of The Baylor School
(Chattanooga, TN) and a 1956 graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he served as the Treasurer of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After college, he served as an officer in the United States Army and was stationed in El Paso, TX. In 1960, he moved to Atlanta and began a career in securities sales with Equitable Securities. Between 1960 and 2002 he worked as an institutional salesman at several different brokerage firms, including E.F. Hutton and Wachovia. He was President of the Georgia Security Dealers Association, as well as President of Big Brothers Association of Atlanta and a National Board member of Big Brothers Association.
Harrington was a devout Christian and an active member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. At Peachtree, he served in various capacities including Clerk of Session, Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Stephen Minister, Treasure and church representative to Clifton Sanctuary Ministries. Harrington was preceded in death by his parents, John Alexander Witherspoon and Mary Harrington Witherspoon, and, in 1986, by his wife Sandra (Sandy) Jennings Witherspoon.
He is survived by his wife Mary Louise Yost, daughter Mary Harrington Witherspoon and her partner Beth Lynn, son Gilbert Harrington Witherspoon, Jr. and his wife Tracy Cox Witherspoon, Harrington’s children Wilson and Rowan (their mother Karen E. Simmons), Tracy’s children Sarah, Aislinn and Zoe, brother John A. Witherspoon (his wife Roberta), niece Lynn W. Osgood and nephews John and Dixon Witherspoon. A Memorial Service will be held in the sanctuary at Peachtree Presbyterian (3434 Roswell Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30305), April 28th at 11 a.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Clifton Sanctuary Ministries or Sea Island Presbyterian Church (Beaufort, SC).
