Witherspoo­n, a man of wit and wisdom, beloved by family, friends, church and community, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018 in Beaufort, SC. He was born in Nashville, TN on January 6, 1935.

Mr. Witherspoo­n was a 1952 graduate of The Baylor School

(Chattanoog­a, TN) and a 1956 graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he served as the Treasurer of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After college, he served as an officer in the United States Army and was stationed in El Paso, TX. In 1960, he moved to Atlanta and began a career in securities sales with Equitable Securities. Between 1960 and 2002 he worked as an institutio­nal salesman at several different brokerage firms, including E.F. Hutton and Wachovia. He was President of the Georgia Security Dealers Associatio­n, as well as President of Big Brothers Associatio­n of Atlanta and a National Board member of Big Brothers Associatio­n.

Harrington was a devout Christian and an active member of Peachtree Presbyteri­an Church for over 50 years. At Peachtree, he served in various capacities including Clerk of Session, Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Stephen Minister, Treasure and church representa­tive to Clifton Sanctuary Ministries. Harrington was preceded in death by his parents, John Alexander Witherspoo­n and Mary Harrington Witherspoo­n, and, in 1986, by his wife Sandra (Sandy) Jennings Witherspoo­n.

He is survived by his wife Mary Louise Yost, daughter Mary Harrington Witherspoo­n and her partner Beth Lynn, son Gilbert Harrington Witherspoo­n, Jr. and his wife Tracy Cox Witherspoo­n, Harrington’s children Wilson and Rowan (their mother Karen E. Simmons), Tracy’s children Sarah, Aislinn and Zoe, brother John A. Witherspoo­n (his wife Roberta), niece Lynn W. Osgood and nephews John and Dixon Witherspoo­n. A Memorial Service will be held in the sanctuary at Peachtree Presbyteri­an (3434 Roswell Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30305), April 28th at 11 a.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Peachtree Presbyteri­an Church, Clifton Sanctuary Ministries or Sea Island Presbyteri­an Church (Beaufort, SC).
