Mission fails health inspection

- By Pamela Miller

A downtown organization that aids homeless residents failed a recent health inspection. Atlanta Union Mission on Ivan Allen Boulevard received a score of 66/U on April 11. Previous scores were a 90/A on March 5, 2018 and 70/C on Feb. 8, 2018.

According to the report, there was no active managerial control present to ensure the establishment was in compliance with food code and ensure there were no risk factors to promote foodborne illness.

The inspector observed:

■ Failure to provide proof food is from an approved source. The facility was receiving donated food that was already cooked/prepared as well as opened/cooked/ prepared food items. Donations must be documented that they were received from a facility with a valid license or permit.

■ Failure to properly sanitize food contact surfaces. There was heavy buildup in interior of ice machine.

■ Wiping cloth chlorine sanitizing solution was not at proper minimum strength and there was heavy debris inside of all sanitizing buckets.

■ Failure to properly date mark food items prepared on site and held more than 24 hours inside of walk in cooler, including: kale, rice, hot dogs, chicken and diced tomatoes. All items without a date were discarded.

■ Live roach crawling on wall in dish washer area left of shelving unit.

■ Evidence of rodent activity — droppings found in dry storage area on cans and items stored on shelving units, and on the floor behind all shelving units.

Most facilities with a failed score are reinspected within 10 days.
