Spurrier, Tebow talked about Orlando team

Could Steve Spurrier and Tim Tebow form the ultimate Florida Gators super duo in the Alliance of American Football?

The Head Ball Coach likes the idea, and he’s actively pursuing it.

It was announced last week Spurrier, 73, will return to coaching in 2019 as the head coach the new football league’s Orlando franchise.

During a radio interview, Spurrier indicated that he was intrigued by the idea of bringing Tebow back to the football field and it appears as though he followed up on that idea in short order.

He told SiriusXM’s Chris Doering and Chris Childers that he has had contact with Tebow about joining him in the AAF.

“I’ve had some contact with Tim,” Spurrier said. “And right now his message is: ‘Coach, I’m going to keep swinging the bat.’ And I said ‘I don’t blame you. I’d swing the bat all this summer and see where that leads.’ But if it doesn’t materialize, I think he has some football left in him. We’re just going to have to wait and see on that.”

Spurrier gave another interview last week to The Dan Patrick Show, during which he expressed a similar thought process on Tebow.

“If he’s swinging a bat and hitting the ball and he wants to stay with baseball, I can understand that,” Spurrier told Dan Patrick. “But if he wants to start throwing the (football), we have a No. 15 jersey waiting for him.”

The recruiting pitch was quite clear during another interview with SiriusXM: Tebow is a winner at every level of football.

“Let me just tell you this,” Spurrier said. “Tim Tebow won the state high school football championship for his high school in Jacksonville, he was on two national championship teams here at Florida and was on two SEC championship teams and lost a SEC game his senior year. His record about winning has been pretty doggone good. I think he started six games at Denver and won them all, won a playoff game (against Pittsburgh) and then lost at New England. And then he never played again . ...

“Now, I know he don’t look pretty at practice all the time, but neither did Danny Wuerffel . ... But when the game started, oh, he was very pretty. I sort of think Tim Tebow is like that.”

Tebow had a .133 batting average with the New York Mets’ Double-A affiliate. At 30, this may be Tebow’s last season to make a push for the big leagues.
