Q: Why were Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter not at Barbara Bush’s funeral?

A: Former President Jimmy Carter was on a private trip overseas, and Rosalynn Carter was unable to travel because of her recent intestinal surgery, the AJC previously reported. She had scar tissue removed on Feb. 18 from “a portion of her small intestine caused by removal of a cyst many years ago,” according to a statement from The Carter Center.

George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush were joined by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton at Bush’s private funeral service Saturday in Houston. Former first ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton and current first lady Melania Trump also attended and posed for a photo with the former presidents that was taken by photographer Paul Morse from George H.W.
