Shot cop recovering; suspect arrested

A Middle Georgia police officer is recovering after officials said a suspect shot him during a domestic dispute.

The shooting happened Friday night on Vanessa Drive in Centervill­e, just south of Macon in Houston County.

GBI agents confirmed 45-year-old Perry Baggett was arrested following the nine-hour standoff in Centervill­e.

Baggett is accused of shooting Officer Jeremy Mashuga when he responded to a domestic violence call. Mashuga survived the shooting.

Lt. Brian Blanton with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office told Channel 2 Action News the suspect who shot the officer was barricaded inside a home for hours.

Authoritie­s detained Baggett just before 7 a.m. Saturday, GBI special agent in charge J.T. Ricketson told WMAZ.

Mashuga was shot around 10 p.m. Friday evening as he approached the house.

Baggett then barricaded himself inside the house.

According to The Macon Telegraph, shots could be heard being fired shortly before midnight, and gunfire was exchanged multiple times throughout the night and early morning.

Baggett was barricaded inside the house with a woman, whom police were able to rescue.

Mashuga was taken to Navicent Health hospital, where he was expected to recover.
