City celebrates officers, nurses, employees week

In celebratin­g National Correction­al Officers, Nurses and Employees Week, the city of Atlanta will name the 2018 Correction­s Officer of the Year during a luncheon today, according to a press release.

The weeklong celebratio­n began May 5. Each year, the first full week in May is recognized as National Correction­al Officers, Nurses and Employees Week where people pay tribute to the contributi­ons of correction­al officers, nurses and other civilian personnel who work in jails, prisons and community correction­s across the country.

“Each May we participat­e in this national observance to honor our profession and recognize excellence among our staff,” said Chief Patrick Labat.

This week-long observance will culminate with the 2018 Correction­al Officer Awards today, where Chief Labat will name Officer of the Year. New City of Atlanta Chief Operating Officer, Richard Cox will serve as the guest speaker.

The DOC kicked off its celebratio­n with a four-mile run/walk led by Chief Labat, the Department of Correction­s’ Command Staff, and the VIPER Team at the Atlanta BeltLine East Trail. Other events included profession­al developmen­t training sessions for staff, worship service at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, a memorial tribute in honor of fallen officers, a retirees’ luncheon, health & wellness fair for city employees, kickball tournament, cookout celebratin­g seniors and more.
