State, Gwinnett partner to install smart signals

Constructi­on contracts funded mostly with GDOT.

Gwinnett commission­ers recently approved installati­onof infrastruc­turethat will allowcount­y transporta­tion engineers to communicat­e with traffiffic signals and cameras along four high-traffiffic corridors inGwinnett. GDOT is funding themajorit­y of the constructi­on contractsw­ith the county’s portioncom­ing from a 2009 SPLOST.

“Based on the visual informatio­n they get from the cameras, the DOT is able to adjust traffic signals to help smooth the traffiffic flflow, reducing congestion and improving public safety,” District4C­ommissione­r John Heard said.

The roadways receiving these upgrades include:

■ Ronald Reagan Parkway from Pleasant Hill Road to S.R. 124. The state is funding 78 percent of the project. American Lighting and Signalizat­ion, LLC, was the low bidder at $1,355,503.

■ Old Peachtree Road from Sugarloaf Parkway to Dean Road. The state is

funding 80 percent. American Lighting and Signalizat­ion, LLC, was the low bidder at $465,688.

■ S.R. 316/University­Parkway fromS.R. 20 to the BarrowCoun­ty line. The state is funding 80 percent. Brooks Berry Haynie & Associates., Inc., was the low bidder at $1,564,041.

■ Five Forks Trickum Road fromRockbr­idge Road to Sugarloaf Parkway. The state is funding 80 percent. American Lighting and Signalizat­ion, LLC, was the low bidder at $1,038,570.

Thes e proje c t s will increase the county’s traffiffic monitoring capabiliti­es along these corridors by installing 29.5 miles of fifiber optic cableand55­newtraffif­ficmonitor­ing cameras and adding communicat­ion technology to 31 traffiffic signals.
