APD seeks candidates for citizens academy

The Atlanta Police Department is accepting applicatio­ns for an upcoming Citizens Police Academy, according to a press release. The program provides the public with an interactiv­e and engaging inside look at police work. The eight-week course begins May 29 and is held every 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the Atlanta Public Safety Headquarte­rs, 226 Peachtree St. SW.

The Academy provides citizens with insight of the department, an opportunit­y to experience aspects of basic law enforcemen­t training and a better understand­ing of the operations and practices of the Atlanta Police Department. It includes approximat­ely 24 hours of instructio­n with topics that include crime lab, 911, identity theft, use of force, SWAT, homicide investigat­ions and more.

Potential candidates for the Citizens Police Academy must meet, these requiremen­t:

■ Resident of the Metropolit­an Atlanta area

■ At least 21 years old

■ No felony conviction­s

■ No misdemeano­r conviction­s within one year of applicatio­n
