Silent film at square

Fans of the genre of silent film may want to check out the Strand Theatre.

“Wings,” produced by Lucien Hubbard and directed by William A. Wellman, will be shown at 3 p. m. Sunday on the Marietta Square.

In this classic, released by Paramount Pictures in 1927, two youngmen — one rich, one middle class— who are in love with the same woman become fighter pilots in World War I.

It stars Clara Bow, Charles “Buddy” Rogers and Richard Arlen. Gary Cooper also has a small role that helped launched his Hollywood career.

All silent films are accompanied live on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ by Strand organist Ron Carter.

The organ was originally purchased by private owners in 1999 for installation in their Columbus, Ohio, home. It was built by the Allen Organ Co. of Macungie, Penn.
