Officer shot while serving felon warrant
A man shot and injured a Cobb County police officer Friday morning as he was being served an arrest warrant at an Austell home, authorities said.
Dvonte Whitaker was booked in the Cobb County Detention Center after the shooting, according to jail records. His charges were not listed.
Cobb police were assisting the Georgia Department of Corrections with serving a warrant in the 700 block of Six Flags Road, Channel 2 Action News reported. Residents in the home initially told police Whitaker was not there, but a state agent found him hiding in the bathroom, according to Channel 2.
When the agent attempted to arrest Whitaker, a struggle ensued, and he reached for the agent’s gun, police told Channel 2. The gun discharged and hit a Cobb County police officer in the arm.
The officer was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Whitaker was arrested at the scene.
According to the Georgia DOC website, Whitaker served one year and six months at Macon State Prison on a slew of charges including cruelty to children, burglary, theft, possession of marijuana and possession of a weapon during a crime. The crimes were committed in Cobb County between April and June of 2014.
Authorities have not said what charges Whitaker was wanted on prior to Friday’s arrest.
