Organization packaging and distributing 'good'
A local business in Dunwoody is aiming to empower all children to do good, while inspiring the next generation of giving. The Packaged Good was founded in 2016 by Sally Mundell, whose husband passed away unexpectedly in 2013, leaving her to raise their two daughters on her own. Mundell and her daughters found that volunteering and giving to others helped provide them a path to healing. But, finding kid-friendly volunteer opportunities was limited and often difficult. This allowed Mundell to become a mother on a mission and create what her daughters needed and in honor of her husband, she founded The Packaged Good. “We provide a fun environment where children, community groups and corporations can have a hands-on volunteering experience. We create acts of kindness through the creation of care packages and as a community, we have created over 24,000 since our founding,” said Samantha Kurgan, executive director. “We are the only storefront that allows individuals young and old to come together, volunteer and make an impact in the community they live in.” For Mother’s Day, the organization hosted its Feel Good - Do Good event for children and their moms. The morning started off with a Feel Good family friendly yoga program and then followed with the Do Good packing party. The kids and their moms created pamper bags and care packages for mom’s in shelters. They also painted little wooden toy animals that were included in their gift bags for their children and to learn about two of the charity partners The Packaged Good works with: Mary Hall Freedom House and Community Assistance Center. “All moms should be celebrated regardless of their circumstances,” added Kurgan. “Everyone deserves a little something special to tell them that they are appreciated.” The Packaged Good relies on the community to make its mission possible. The community can send donations and sponsorships to support the programs it offers or come and volunteer with the organization. Its volunteer programs include a monthly spotlight service program; community events on public holidays, crisis response events and Pay It Forward programs which aim to help participants from one nonprofit organization to volunteer and create care packages for other nonprofit organizations. “We always want families to take time out of their lives, connect with each other and enjoy time together giving back to others. My favorite part is seeing parents, grandparents and children coming into our center and participating in one of our programs together. What we offer is more than simply care packages to those who need it the most - we also offer the ability for children, families and adults to get engaged in our community,” added Kurgan.
