Maze, 'crowns' and butterflies are options

Break out your summer whites.

If you want an alterna- tive, there’s also the play “Crowns” starring Terry Burrell, a butterfly festival and book signings.

Audiences will love the “hattitude” on display during the current run of the gospel musical, “Crowns,” at the Southwest Arts Center.

The play, directed by Golden Globe winning playwright Regina Taylor, runs through June 10.

It’s adapted from the book, “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats” by Craig Marberry and photog- rapher Michael Cunningham.

The play celebrates the stand-up-and-be-counted African-American tradition that has evolved out of a legacy of pain, pride and survival.

Centered on a young girl as the main character, Yolanda, the plot follows her journey down south from Brook- lyn after the death of her brother. There, she finds strength in the stories of the town’s women and the rituals connected to their hats that they call crowns.

“Crowns” is directed by Thomas W. Jones II and stars actress Terry Burrell, Tyler Prynce, Sandra Jones, Jennifer Myles, Brittany Inge as Jeannette and Andrea Connor. Eric Moore will take on the various male characters that appear throughout the production.

What’s summer in Atlanta without a Maze featuring Frankie Beverly concert?

The “Joy and Pain,” singer comes to State Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park on Saturday. The show features special guest Anthony Hamilton.

Frankie Beverly and Maze, initially known as Raw Soul, doesn’t pop out a new CD every year. Doesn’t matter.

They have a dedicated fan base who jam every year to a list of favorites including “Southern Girl,” “We Are One,” and “Before I Let Go.”

Rivers will bring their Americana folk-pop sound to the

Roswell Riverside Sounds Free Concert Series on Saturday.

The concerts are produced by the city of Roswell’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department. Concert goers can share their photos using the hashtag #WhenInRoswell and #Ros- wellRiversideSounds.

Guests can bring their own picnic and lawn chairs.

Butterfly Festival

The Chattahoochee Nature Center will hold its “19th Annual Flying Colors But- terfly Festival” Saturday and Sunday in Roswell. The theme of this year’s celebration is Monarchs and Milkweed. The air will be filled with butterflies set free during the releases. There will also be face-painting, crafts, live music, yoga classes and food. The “Butterfly Encounter” tented exhibit allows visitors to hand-feed free-flying butterflies. Experts will be on hand to offer advice on attracting pollinators to your garden.

Pamela Druckerman book signing
