Sushi spot named one of the best in nation

Atlanta has been lauded for its diverse burger scene and its topnotch, finger-licking barbecue, and now we’ve got bragging rights for an international cuisine that originates a long way from the South.

Culture website T hrillist released its top 31 sushi restaurants in America list in November, and, wouldn’t you know it, a Buckhead hot spot AJC dining editors once referred to as “glamour sushi” has served up just enough mystique to appease the selective appetite of Thrillist editors.

Tomo, located on Peachtree Road in Buckhead, offers L.A.style sushi in a mesmerizing atmosphere. Master chef and owner Tomo Naito, born in Osaka, Japan, opened the Japanese eatery in 2011 with one basic concept: “to do contemporary Japanese food with the absolute finest hand-picked ingredients from all over the world,” according to the restaurant’s website.

Naito has clearly fulfilled that mission, which all started with his desire to study theater in America. Thrillist writer Matt Lynch takes note of Tomo’s “glitzy” location but makes it clear the true glitz is all on the plate.

“Several years have passed since he upgraded from his original strip mall digs to a more glitzy Buckhead home, but the execution of signature creations like the Lobster a la Musso — an indulgent amalgam of lobster sashimi and uni with yuzu ponzu, white truffle oil and quail egg — thankfully has not.”

In addition to this accolade, Tomo has been named one of Atlanta Magazine’s “50 best restaurants” twice, and Zagat has also raved about the sushi spot’s exotic offerings.
