Intersection to close for two weeks to finish roundabout

- By Mitchell Northam Mitchell.Northam@ajc.com

The city of Roswell announced last week that it will close the intersection of Hardscrabble and Chaffin roads for two weeks to shorten the construction time of the Hardscrabble Green Loop Project.

When the intersection reopens, it will look a lot different. Crews will be building a roundabout there.

The closure will begin on July 9 and the intersection is projected to reopen on July 23. The city estimates that this closure will shave “four to five months” off construction time for the Hardscrabble Green Loop Project.

Through traffic will be required to detour around the intersection during the two-week closure, local residents will still be allowed access. Signage will alert drivers of detours.

The entire Hardscrabble Green Loop project is slated to be finished by summer 2019, the city said in a recent news release. But in January, Roswell Mayor Lori Henry was optimistic about it being completed this year.

Ground broke on the project in October 2017. Design for the $5.8 million project began in 2011.

The Hardscrabble Green Loop will be a “complete street,” featuring intersection improvements, sidewalks, bike lanes and a multiuse trail. It will allow bicyclists and pedestrians to use both sides of Hardscrabble Road. The project will add 1.2 miles of multiuse paths, 1.4 miles of sidewalk and 2.4 miles of new bike lanes.
