City sets dates for public hearings on millage rate

- DAVID IBATAFORTHE AJC

Sandy Springs announced public hearings on next year’s millage rate — to remain unchanged at 4.731 mills, as set forth in the city’s charter, but which will increase property taxes by 6.29 percent over the rollback millage rate because of higher tax assessments.

The public hearings are set for 6 p.m. Tuesday; and 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Aug. 7, at Sandy Springs City Hall, 1 Galambos Way.

“The budget tentatively adopted by the city of Sandy Springs mayor and city council requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate,” the city said, so before the city can finalize its budget and set a final millage rate, “Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.”

Sandy Springs’ budget, with a gross total amount of $463.4 million and a general fund of $110.4 million, addresses what officials have called a “significant backlog of existing infrastructure deficiencies.”
