City to hold property tax hearing Monday

- CAROLYN CUNNINGHAM FOR THE AJC

Austell residents will have two more opportunities to comment on whether they agree with a property tax increase.

Following the first public hearing on July 9, these hearings will be held at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers, Austell City Hall, 2716 Broad St., Austell with the next Council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 6.

The City Council tentatively has adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by 7.69 percent, according to a city statement.

This proposed increase would result in a millage rate of 3.25 mills, an increase of .232 mills.

Without this tentative t ax increase, the millage rate would be no more than 3.018 mills. However, in recent years, the millage rate has been 3.25 in 2017, 3.06 in 2016 to 2014 and 4 mills in 2013.

The proposed a nnual tax increase for a house with a fair market value of $100,000 would be about $9.28 and, for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $300,000, around $27.84.
