ODDS AND ENDS
Cycling: Dylan Groenewegen won a second consecutive stage at the Tour de France when he sprinted to the finish, and Greg Van Avermaet kept the overall lead for a fifth consecutive day. Dutch rider Groenewegen beat Andre Greipel and Fernando Gaviria to the line to win Stage 8 in more than four hours. Four-time winner Chris Froome remained over a minute behind Van Avermaet, a support rider for BMC top rider Richie Porte. NASCAR: Christopher Bell rallied from the rear of the field after a tire change due to a spin during qualifying to win the Xfinity Series race at Kentucky Speedway. He steadily worked his way up the field and passed Justin Allgaier with 17 laps remaining, then held off Daniel Hemric to win the 300-mile race. Bell, who has three career victories in the Xfinity Series, moved within 17 points of co-leaders Elliott Sadler (12th) and Hemric. Soccer: Miami city commissioners have pushed back a vote following hours of public comment for and against David Beckham’s latest soccer stadium plan. Commissioners delayed a decision until Wednesday to put a measure on the November ballot to replace the cityowned Melreese Country Club. The former Manchester United star and business partner Jorge Mas pitched a plan for their MLS franchise calling for a 28,000-seat stadium, hotels, restaurants, shops, a new park and public soccer fields near Miami International Airport. College football: The College Football Playoff agreements for the Cotton Bowl Classic, Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl have been extended six years through 2026. The three bowl games will host a CFP game every year during the six-year period: the semifinals twice, and other non-playoff games assigned by the CFP selection committee four times.
