Rookie WR Callaway finds trouble again

-

Antonio Callaway didn’t take long to run into trouble with the Browns. The fourthround draft pick and wide receiver from Florida, who arrived in Cleveland with a history of issues while in college, was cited early Sunday morning for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license.

According to a report by police in Strongsville, Ohio, Callaway was pulled over in his car after he failed to yield to on oncoming traffic. Police found a “small amount” of marijuana and cited Callaway, who was stopped on a day off for Cleveland’s players at training camp.

The Browns selected Callaway in this year’s draft despite his checkered past. He was suspended last season for involvement in a credit card fraud case, and he provided a diluted urine sample at the NFL combine in February.

Callaway’s driving infraction came hours before the Browns traded disappointing wide receiver Corey Coleman to Buffalo. That move caused the team to elevate Callaway into the starting lineup before Thursday’s exhibition opener at the Giants.

Callaway was already in Stage 1 of the league’s abuse program because of his diluted sample. He could be subject to a fine because of this infraction.

The Browns released a statement saying they were aware of Callaway’s citation.

Chargers: Defensive end Joey Bosa left practice early Tuesday because of a left foot injury. Coach Anthony Lynn did not speak to reporters following practice, and there was no immediate word on the severity of the injury. Bosa has 23 career sacks in two seasons since being drafted third overall in 2016.

Eagles: Quarterback Nick Foles has missed three straight practices because of muscle spasms near his shoulder and neck. Foles’ injury isn’t considered serious, but it’s unlikely the Super Bowl MVP will play in the preseason opener Thursday night against Pittsburgh. With starter Carson Wentz still rehabbing from knee surgery, third-stringer Nate Sudfeld will likely get most of the snaps.

ODDS AND ENDS

MLB: Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is officially out for the season after surgery on his left hip to repair a torn labrum. The expected recovery time is about six months. The 34-year-old Ellsbury has been out all season with a number of injuries including an oblique strain and sore back.

■ Red Sox ace Chris Sale is scheduled to come off the 10-day disabled list and start against the Orioles on Sunday. Sale (11-4) has not pitched since July 27 against Minnesota because of mild left shoulder inflammation.

■ The Nationals signed veteran reliever Greg Holland, hoping he can return to form and use his postseason experience to help Washington make a playoff run. Holland has appeared in 12 postseason games, including the 2014 World Series with Kansas City, and has 186 career saves.

College basketball: Michigan coach John Beilein underwent a double-bypass heart procedure and is expected to make a full recovery, the school said. AD Warde Manuel described the surgery as “proactive” and said Beilein was resting comfortably and expected to leave the hospital in a few days.

College football: Ohio State is trying to get back to business as usual while coach Urban Meyer is on paid leave, opening part of Tuesday’s practice to the media even as coaches and players remained off-limits for interviews. Meyer was put on paid leave last week amid questions about what he knew and did about accusations of abuse against ex-assistant Zach Smith in 2015.
