Did Fromm answer UGA’s QB question?

- By Chris Starrs

ATHENS — With five days remaining before No. 3 Georgia opens the season hosting Austin Peay, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart remained elusive about who will start at quarterback, pointing out Monday afternoon that he’s not announcing a starting lineup for “all positions.”

But sophomore quarterback Jake Fromm may have let the dawg out of the bag later in the day when he was queried about Georgia’s formidable platoon of running backs.

“I feel comfortable with everybody back there and I’m excited to see who’s standing next to me when we go out for that first drive,” said Fromm in his first meeting with the media since April’s G-Day game.

There’s still plenty of time for something to change, but Smart said again Monday that Fromm — who threw for 2,615 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2017 — had taken most of the snaps with the first team.

Fromm returns to the fold this fall after a summer he’d probably rather forget as his recreational pursuits earned him a fishing hook in the leg and a broken non-throwing hand. He offered an update on his hand and admitted he didn’t want to alert Smart to his injury until he had all the facts.

“The hand is a lot better,” Fromm said. “It’s definitely coming back to normal, so I don’t have a timetable for the brace yet, but I’m getting X-rays soon and I’ll see what it says . ... I really didn’t want coach Smart to find out until I kind of knew what was going on and how bad it really was. I was trying to keep it kind of under the table.”

There’s no doubt Fromm is a different player from a year ago when he recalls he was just hoping to get some playing time in the Bulldogs’ first game. Senior center Lamont Gaillard said he’s seen progress in every aspect of Fromm’s game.

“He’s definitely stepping up more as a leader and more at quarterback in his position because he’s got competition,” Gaillard said.

Injury update: Receiver Terry Godwin, who has been slowed by a knee injury, is questionable for the Austin Peay game, Smart said, and junior defensive back Tyrique McGee (foot) won’t be available Saturday.

Wide receivers Jayson Stanley (quad) and Kearis Jackson (hamstring) were set to practice Monday, but Smart did not commit to saying if either would be available for the season opener.
