Where can I find it?

What is the best way to sell a used fur coat in metro Atlanta?

- By Sabine Morrow

A reader recently requested help after inheriting a full-length mink coat in excellent condition. He had no idea how to go about selling it. He wasn’t interested in placing it on eBay or any other online site. Nor did he want to have it transformed into pillows, a throw or a teddy bear.

When I called around to various furriers, I learned that this reader wasn’t alone. People regularly inquire whether local fur shops buy used furs. The ones I called do not.

However, I found another solution. If you want to sell a used fur, consider a local consignment store.

I checked with Alexis’ Suitcase Consignment, 2221 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, 770390-0010, which sells some high-end items. The store starts accepting furs around the end of September or the beginning of October when the weather cools and customers might be inclined to consider a fur coat. Someone at the store will price the coat, and when it sells, you receive your share of the proceeds. If the coat is priced between $100 to $500, you receive 50 percent of the sale price. If it sells for $500 to $1000, then you earn 60 percent.

If you want to donate a fur — from stoles to coats — consider Coats for Cubs, the fur drive that collects furs, then donates them to wildlife rehab centers throughout the country. The drive is operated by resale fashion retailer Buffalo Exchange. Locally, you can drop off furs at Buffalo Exchange, 1057 Ponce de Leon Ave., Atlanta, 404-817-0821. At the end of the year, the store sends the furs to the corporate office, which distributes them as needed.

Q: I need your help in finding a product called ChairLoc. I have used this product for several years and my last bottle was used up. Chair-Loc is not a glue. It soaks into the wood grain and swells the wood fibers inside the joint to lock the joint permanently. Thank you for your help. — Jim Gardner, email

A: Jim, Chair-Loc, used to tighten chair rungs and legs, as well as dovetailed joints and even axe, rake and mop handles, has been discontinued. However, I checked with someone at Woodcraft of Atlanta, 8560 Holcomb Bridge Road, Alpharetta, 770-587-3372, and found out that Briwax ChaiRX is a comparable product that works in the same way as Chair-Loc. You’ll find a fourounce bottle for $17.99.

Q: Each year, I make my husband his favorite chickenand-artichoke hearts dish for his birthday. The recipe uses frozen artichoke hearts. Sometimes I can find them in my regular market, and often I can’t. I would like to have a reliable supply since this dish is also one of our favorites for company. Can you help me keep a few bags on hand at all times? — S. Taylor, Norcross

A: You’ll find plenty of frozen artichoke hearts at Trader Joe’s, 5185 Peachtree Parkway, Norcross, 678-9669236. A 12-ounce bag costs $3.29. Having trouble finding a particular item?
